Governor backs mayor’s bid for congressional seat

EASTERN Samar Governor Conrado Nicart said he will fully support Mayor Annaliza Kwan if she decides to run for the province’s congressional district against incumbent Representative Ben Evardone this coming election.

Nicart said he would seek for another term as Vice Governor Christopher Sheen Gonzalez will run for mayor of Guiuan town.

The vice governor is the young brother of outgoing Guiuan mayor Kwan.
Kwan earlier admitted that she is thinking seriously her options in relation to what post she would seek come the 2013 elections, including running against Evardone.

Evardone, a former governor, is on his first term as congressman and is expected to seek for another term.
Evardone, Nicart and Kwan are affiliated with the Liberal Party.

“I am sure that if she made her final decision, our line-up will not be changed as we already fixed it,” Nicart said.

Nicart added that it is high time that a representative of their province would come from the southern part of the province.

The last congressional representative who hails from the southern part of Eastern Samar was Felipe Abrigo, also a Guiuananon, who served as representative from the 4th until the 7th Congress from 1957 to 1972.

“People from the south should be solid in supporting her if she formalized her decision to run,” Nicart said, adding that people in the northern part of Eastern Samar are solid when it comes to deciding who to support during an election.

Although he is from the northern part of Eastern Samar, Nicart said he supports Kwan just what he did when her younger brother ran for the vice gubernatorial seat.

“I know that she will not forget those who are from the north even her priorities might be the needs of people from the south,” he added.

Asked for her reaction on Nicart’s open support on her possible congressional bid, Kwan declined to comment.

She, however, said she was honored with Nicart’s support.

Kwan said she approached Nicart when she planned to run for mayor of Guiuan
