22, 2012. Guiuan, Eastern Samar. The Municipality of Guiuan recently hosted the
orientation on Human Rights Laws conducted by the personnel from the Regional
Office No. VIII of the Commission on Human Rights. The orientation is part of
the program of the Commission to education and to inform the public about their
rights as citizens of this country and as individuals.
The
Orientation started with the usual opening program with Vice- Mayor Rogelio O.
Cablao delivering the welcome address on behalf of Mayor Annaliza Gonzales
Kwan. This was immediately followed with the orientation proper. The first part
of the orientation was the overview of the Commissions Vision and Mission. This
segued into the discussions of the basic human rights of every individual. This
portion of the orientation was made by Mr. Gilacio M. Bigute, Information
Officer III of the Regional Office of CHR.
After
the discussion of the basic human rights, the highlight of the orientation
focused on the discussion on Republic Act 9262 or the Anti-Violence against
Women and their Children Act 2004. This topic was delivered by Atty. Cecil M.
Andrade IV of CHR Regional Office. A large part of the interaction was on the
acts of violence against women and their children commonly occur. Atty. Andrade
also gave emphasis on the different
forms of redress the various kinds of Protection Order that the woman may to
protect herself or her children when subjected to violence in their home,
office or in public.
Atty.
Andrade winded up the discussion by encouraging the LGU employees and other
participants who are or know somebody being subjected to violence to seek
refuge for their miseries or that of their friends and relatives through
Republic Act 9262.
